Five Factors That Make a Football Player Great

What makes the best football player

“What makes the best football player?” has many answers. From a young age, I was obsessed with the game and have written articles for Sports Illustrated and The Wall Street Journal on some of the best players in the world. But after writing about players as famous as Casemiro and Sadio Mane, I’ve decided to look deeper into the topic. I’ve decided to break it down into five factors that make a player great:

Casemiro

Sergio Busquets, the captain of Barcelona, has praised Real Madrid teammate Casemiro as one of the best players in the world’s midfield. Despite being involved in the Europa League action on Thursday, the Catalan giants are already looking ahead to the El Clasico on Sunday. Busquets said he’s looking forward to this game in an interview with Spanish outlet El Mundo because of his relationship with Casemiro.

The Brazilian has played for the Brazil U17s and U20s and made his senior debut against Argentina in 2011. He has since proven himself to be a valuable member of the Sao Paulo team and has continued to impress throughout his career. In 2012, Casemiro was loaned to Real Madrid following the club’s Copa Sudamericana victory. A year later, Casemiro signed a permanent deal with Real Madrid.

Sadio Mane

Liverpool’s new signing was the most expensive African footballer ever, and he quickly made an impression on fans. He is now part of a world-class attacking trio, a Champions League winner. He arrived at Anfield in 2016, making him the most expensive African player in history. While many players struggle to adapt to big-money moves, Mane has done that. He has helped build a school and a hospital in his native Senegal.

Aside from becoming the first Senegalese player to win the Premier League, Mane also became the first-ever player to appear in a Champions League final. The Senegalese star has also become a club-record goalscorer, scoring more than 100 Premier League goals. He could be the first player to lift the CAN trophy as Senegal plays Zimbabwe on January 10th. The country hopes to realize its full potential in the tournament after a legendary 2002 World Cup victory over France.

Neymar

Although Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have won the Golden Ball, Neymar is in the same conversation as these players. Though Neymar hasn’t produced the dizzying stats that these two players have, he can always whip out a beautiful skill. This is what separates him from the rest of the pack. He is arguably the best player globally, and he is still only 20 years old.

During his eight seasons in the top five European leagues, Neymar has contributed 121 goals and 67 assists. He is also the best player when traveling with the ball at his feet. On average, Neymar makes 32 ball carries per 90 minutes, making him the most advanced player globally. His goal-scoring record is also impressive. He has scored 21 goals, assisted on another twenty-six, and created one goal himself.

Taylor

There’s no doubt that Charles Taylor is one of the greatest football players. A dominant linebacker, Taylor changed the game of football forever. He was the first outside linebacker to go from “read and react” to aggressive. He was the first player to swat the football out of the hands of the quarterback. He forced 34 fumbles in his career, most of them quarterback fumbles.

In 1986, Taylor was the NFL’s defensive player of the year after leading the league with 20.5 sacks. That record remains unbroken. Taylor recorded four sacks against the Philadelphia Eagles in one game. He was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year that year, which was only the second time a defensive player had won the honor. The Giants’ defense was no longer among the league’s best, but Taylor still led them to a 12-win season.

Jim Brown

It’s no secret that Jim Brown was a great football player. The legendary fullback was a versatile player, running the ball and catching passes, returning kickoffs, and even catching touchdown passes. His career totals were staggering, 12,312 rushing yards and 15,459 combined net yards. The legendary athlete was named a unanimous first-team All-NFL selection eight times and was selected to nine Pro Bowls in nine years. Three of those appearances were outstanding performances, and he closed out his career with three touchdowns in the 1966 Pro Bowl.

Before becoming an NFL star, Brown was an All-American in lacrosse and football. He played both sports and averaged 11.3 points per game. After graduating from Syracuse University, he became a first-team All-American in lacrosse. His sports achievements earned him a place in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The Cleveland Browns took him with the sixth overall pick in the 1957 draft.
