Phil Mickelson Removed From List of Competitors for 2022 Masters

The three-time champion is no longer listed in the field of active players but instead as a past champion who is not playing

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has confirmed that Phil Mickelson will take a break from golf and will not compete in the 2022 Masters. This news comes after the golfer made controversial comments to a journalist in November, claiming that his comments were made off the record. However, he acknowledges that his comments were “reckless” and were not intended to hurt anyone. Since the Saudi International tournament in early February, the left-hander has not played, and he skipped the Players Championship in Florida this week. The 30-year-old has not played in a Masters event since 1994, and he has not competed in one since then.

Earlier this year, the PGA Tour removed Mickelson from its list of competitors. The announcement came shortly after the author of a biography of the golfer published excerpts from the book. Mickelson said that the Saudis are scary, but he was willing to look past the country’s record on human rights. The Saudi government denies allegations of human rights abuses. The former world No. 1 has since apologized and stated that he would take some time off from golf. The golfer became isolated after the book was published, losing a few sponsors.

After a controversial conversation at the Players Championship, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan revealed that Mickelson will not compete at the 2022 Masters. He is still waiting for a call from the player. While he has not played in a major since February, the four-time champion has won the Masters three times. He now has four green jackets and a few majors, including the Masters. Only Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer have more than him, so it is still possible for Mickelson to win the tournament again.
