Here’s a statistic that many non-athletes know. In the Olympics, more than 90% of the medal events are won by some of the top 10 athletes, and almost 70% of the gold medals are won by athletic beings in the top half of the top 10.

Whew, doesn’t that mean that it’s pretty darn easy to be an Olympic athlete, and you only need to be in the top 10 for the bulk of the medals (Some of the very best get snagged for strays, but we’re talking about everyone here, right?). And the only other requirements to be an Olympic athlete are that you must be an outstanding model for America, and if your country is in the Olympics, you would need to do well at the next Olympics.

Athletes know all about getting into the Olympics, but they also need to be mindful of important details. While swimming is the easiest event, it’s also the least likely to consist of true skill and athleticism. But at the same time, one of the largest awards is to get into the Olympics. You can be an outstanding swimmer, but if your event is the only one NOBODY’S doing, then you don’t have a prayer.

So, as an athlete, you must take the time to become knowledgeable of all the ways that you can avoid sharks. For example, there are a lot of athletes who swim quite slowly with grim determination as to their mantra. I’m sure you’ve witnessed this before. But have you ever thought about how it would affect your performance if you were swimming the 100 butterflies: fast, powerful, and Hellishly tough.

Would it be easy compared to swimming the 50 or even the 30 Butterfly? Well, no, because swimming the 50 or even the 30 gives you more breadth and Measurement every time. A few more laps could be the difference between winning and losing or even putting your country in the Olympics!

Another way to think about it is that you have fought to a sublime level to come into the Olympics and swim the 100 flies. It requires incredible strength, stamina, coordination, concentration, and many more attributes. Conquer this, and you’ve got a great shot! But the same is also true to ace the 50 flies. Doesn’t it sound like an easier task? Simply because it’s harder!

Next in your checklist of things to do is to focus on some specific skills, those specific to your event. That is to say, concentrate on your Wing Chun or Freestyle and work on those skills until they are at a level you’re happy with. Although the focus on those other skills to make you the best you can be, don’t neglect the one thing you need to do best. Conditioning is the absolute most important part of your coaching and one of the most neglected. It makes you stronger, increases your performance, and allows you to bring all those skills to the game.

Here is a secret: There is a never-ending process of thought on where to increase those skills and how to accomplish them. Begin by considering what you want to accomplish in the Olympics. What would you like to accomplish? What will help you get there faster? How will you build upon your current skills, making them better? How will you execute the skill better? All of these are important questions to answer and implement during your planning.

Everyone reading this needs to consider this seriously. There is no excuse, and there is no reason that you shouldn’t be thinking about and implementing this at all costs. The Olympics are just a fun place to relax and socialize with friends while you do some serious thinking. After you become a serious athlete and enter the Games, which everyone should do, there’s nothing more you can do than focus on conditioning, learning your weaknesses, preparing for your opponent’s attacks, and working to bring up your strengths. There are no excuses. Make it happen!
